Pheasant Hunting, The
Way It Ought To Be. |
Shotgun Safety
Most of you remember
your youth firearms safety training, come on, think back, it’s in there
somewhere. And indeed, we were taught to be so extra careful. And, once
again, we really were. Most of us have been since, with perhaps a little bit
of casualness creeping in. Guess what – we are back in class. We expect nothing less
than perfect gun handling etiquette. Except when you are on the drive, guns
will be visibly open. Doubles will be broke open, pumps and autos will be
open, (if your auto does not remain open, wedge a shotshell in it). At all
times guns will be pointed away from any living thing. When carried in the
field, guns will be pointed up, never parallel, never to the ground, and
never to the rear. With your safety of
highest priority, the guides will enforce this. Because of our and your
concern to have no accidents we are not embarrassed to correct “casualness”.
Please do not be embarrassed if a correction is pointed out to you. All shots will be taken
up, never parallel to the ground or lower. Ground shots are never
allowed. Birds on the ground belong to the dogs. Very simply, if it there is even
the slightest chance you do not have a safe shot, do not take it. You are
going to see so many birds; there will always be another. For everyone’s sake,
always think and practice gun safety. Another aspect of
shotgun safety is clean killing of the birds. We are hunting wary and strong,
wild birds. Unless you feel so completely skilled in wingshooting, leave your
light loads and small gauge guns home for doves, quail and club hunts. On the
other hand, you don’t need the 3 ½ inch double magnums. But out of respect
for the game and a quick kill, a 12 gauge, 2 ¾ inch, 4, 5, or 6 shot pheasant
load will be very adequate. Each morning, prior to
going to the fields, you are encouraged to warm up on the trap range. Trap
loads are also complimentary. Certified shooting coaches are on staff and can
help you with some fine tuning. We are going to have a
safe hunt; we are going to enjoy a great hunt!
