October 15, 2007 First Hunts
Dakota River
Ranch handled its first fall hunt this past week. The HD Supply Group
from Las
Vegas enjoyed a couple days of great October fall weather. The
birds were scattered but we managed to have plenty of shooting for the group
and bring some birds to the bag. Also along for the hunt was Jeff
Ogletree from Georgia. Huntsman Lynn Peterson took
Jeff out on a hunt and with Lynn handling the Pine Shadows springers,
Merlin and Zia, they were able to bag a limit of South Dakota roosters.
Huntsmen John
Pauly and Mark Sheflo and Mark Haglin handled the Las Vegas group with 8 different springers.
Feb
2007 Zero Degrees Hunting
Dakota River Ranch was host to the
Rodgers Company out of California this past weekend. The California
guys braved the -15 below temperatures for a two day pheasant hunt at the
Dakota River Ranch Preserve The snow and cold was not too bad as the
South Dakota wind did not blow.
The Pine Shadows springers were
working the cattails and many times pushed the roosters out of the
cattails into a straight up flush into the clear blue sky and the guns would
bring them down. Those flushes create classic pheasant flushing pictures
to be remembered by the hunters. Hunting was tough as the snow and heavy
cover made for some difficult walking. Jody did an excellent job feeding the
crew providing excellent cuisine for all the meals.
If your group is thinking of a
hunt there are fall dates open for late November or into December. Call Jody
as soon as possible for more information.
January 07 Bird Dog Parade in Des Moines
The first-ever Bird Dog Parade will
kick off National Pheasant Fest presented by Cabela's in Des Moines. Led by
KCCI meteorologist Bryan Karrick, over 24 bird dogs and their owners will
march through the downtown Des Moines Skywalk. In fact, over 20 different
sporting dog breeds from 19 dog organizations are expected to participate in
the parade which begins at 12 p.m. on Friday, January 19th.
Your DAKOTA RIVER RANCH huntsmen, the
Haglins of Pine Shadows, will be in the parade with their ORVIS Endorsed
springer spaniels.
In addition Mark and Sophie Haglin will be presenting
training seminars throughout the weekend at the National Bird Dog Bonanza
portion of the Pheasants Forever convention. Stop by the Pine Shadows exhibit
in Bird Dog Alley and talk pheasant hunting with your DAKOTA RIVER RANCH
guides. National Pheasant Fest will take place on January 19, 20, and 21 at
the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.
The Fest combines a national consumer
show, habitat seminar series, and family event complete with puppies,
tractors, shotguns, and art. National Pheasant Fest 2007 promises to be the
country's largest event for upland farmers, sport dog owners, and wildlife
habitat conservationists.
December 06 After Thanksgiving Hunts
Birds are
either very skittish or holding tight. Sixty or more pheasants might escape
from the fields as we drive up in the bus, but dogs put up remaining
ringnecks very close to hunters, often in coveys at end of cover. Exciting!
Flocks were found in cattails, reed canary grass, and corn/milo food plots.
The sloughs are frozen - making walking in them much easier.
Weather extremes of freezing drizzle to 50 degree sunshine caused refreshment
extremes from hot chocolate to ice water.
Some consider this the best time of the season.
